Among the great books of philosophy, Discourse on Metaphysics occupies a distinctive place. What's striking about Leibniz is not simply that he was intelligent—history is full of brilliant people—but the quality of his intellect. Reading him, one has the sense of a mind that is extraordinarily integrative. He almost instinctively looks for harmony where others see contradiction.

Consider the tensions that divided seventeenth-century thought:

One of the more revealing comments about Leibniz came from Bertrand Russell (1872–1970). Even when he disagrees with René Descartes (1596–1650), Baruch Spinoza (1632–1677), or the Scholastics, he typically begins by identifying what each got right before explaining where they fall short. That generosity of interpretation is one reason his work often feels constructive rather than combative.

If I were placing him among the major philosophers, I would distinguish between influence and intellectual excellence. By influence alone, figures such as Plato (c. 428–348 BC), Aristotle (384–322 BC), Kant (1724–1804), and perhaps Karl Marx (1818–1883) have had broader historical impact.

But in terms of the sheer quality of mind—the ability to move effortlessly across mathematics, metaphysics, theology, law, science, and logic while seeking a unified vision—Leibniz belongs in the very highest company. He is one of those rare thinkers who make the reader feel that they are watching an exceptionally powerful intellect at work.
