A Course In Miracles

Memory Of God

return to "The Course" main-page:

The memory of God comes to the quiet mind. It cannot come where there is conflict, for a mind at war against itself remembers not eternal gentleness…

Brother, the war against yourself is almost over… The war against yourself was undertaken to teach the Son of God that he is not himself, and not his Father’s Son. For this, the memory of the Father must be forgotten…

What you remember is a part of you. For you must be as God created you… Let all this madness be undone for you, and turn in peace to the remembrance of God, still shining in your quiet mind.

Editor’s note: Learning about God is not so much new information but a remembering of what we once had. We alluded to this in the discussion of “separation,” which is an error of the ego.

Let us take special note that this principle of remembering God might also be applied to one’s destined Twin Soul. In the concluding lines of the “What We Stay Alive For” essay, I offered this:

minds in ecstatic union

“The memory of God,” says the Course In Miracles, “comes to the quiet mind.” It was there all along, but “a mind at war against itself remembers not.” As with God, so too with one "made in the image": the memory of a destined mate comes to a mind prepared to see. It was there all along, but the egoic heart "remembers not.” Even so, do not worry over present unmindfulness; eventually, you will remember, because “what you remember is a part of you.”

ready communion and unbroken fellowship

With greater maturity, we perceive identities revealed - who’s who and for whom. And in that day of sightedness, minds created for each other will live in rapturous and euphoric union; an emulation of the joyous spirit of the Divine Parent(s). This ecstasy of ready communion and unbroken fellowship, of sharing all things as darling companions, of "the great relief of having you to talk to," removes the terror of eternal life, satisfies beseeching human desire, and becomes ultimate reason to stay alive for.

Editor's last word:

The concept that learning is a remembering was also taught by Plato. For the most important precepts of life, it seems to be true. And, as we said, not just for learning of God but also one’s destined cosmic mate.

If this cluster of most valuable points of information already resides in the deeper mind, think of what this means for learning. If learning something new is a remembrance, then we should look for “triggering devices” which will jog the mind into a recollection.

We’ve all experienced forms of this. We’re listening to a song, or we catch of view of some aspect of beauty in nature, or some such, and suddenly, by these triggering devices, we’re transported to a new mental world of perception - but, the item of revelation was there all the time, just waiting to bubble-up to the surface of personhood.

I think this is a major way God teaches us. And I think it’s a primary way that destined lovers are brought together. Triggering devices suddenly, out of the blue, help them to know what to do, and with whom.

As we've used the phrase often in the writings, "one moment of cosmic clarity" and you're all done.
