Collision

return to "Poetry" main-page

Singing its fiery memories of grace
a sunbeam slanted sharp through the kitchen screen
and suddenly, after a million leagues of space,
it struck a drop of water it hadn't seen
The water had been singing a smaller hymn
in a rounder key; spun from the kitchen stove,
its fluid memories of earth were dim,
its private are a leaping after love
What did the two say, when the two collided,
diverted each from singular desire,
when the slant sunbeam shivered and divided
and the round water split into diamond fire?
What wild identity of line and curve
broke to a rainbow on the singing nerve?
