Quantum Mechanics

Alain Aspect: The common world that we know cannot provide a model for the quantum atomic world.

“When you have a situation that can be described only by quantum mechanics, then you can have no picture [no model] that you build from the usual world, from the [image of the] world ... from your scale, the world that you know, but [if] the world at the atomic scale must be described by quantum mechanics, then, if you want to use the usual pictures, then you have strange models.

"So you have only two choices, either, you decide you don’t need any [model], you just write equations, and everything is ok, it’s quantum mechanics , you just write the equations, you make predictions, you make the measurements, the measurements are in agreement with the predictions – that’s enough.

"But if you want a picture, the only picture must come from your usual world, and then when you want to use this picture for the atomic world, there is always something strange in the picture. That is all that I can say.”

Editor's last word:

Aspect contrasts the "shut up and calculate" approach with that which seeks for understanding of the process.
