Addition. When three or more numbers are added, the sum is the same regardless of the way in which the numbers are grouped (or associated). 6 + (4 + 3) = 13 or (6 + 4) + 3 = 13

Multiplication. When three or more numbers are multiplied, the product is the same regardless of the way in which the numbers are grouped (or associated). 6 x (4 x 3) = 72 or (6 x 4) x 3 = 72

requires 3 or more numbers; we can operate on only 2 at one time but we can choose which

similar to commutative, but does not change the sequence: a + (b + c) = (a + b) + c

how numbers "associate" does not change the value (for addition and multipl.)

Changing the grouping (by moving the parentheses) of addends does not change the sum; nor moving the factors, the product

commutative mixes, any order; associative groups, but keeps the order

order of operations does not apply to add. or mult. problems!!!

What a strange world it would be if you could have more or less than 25 cents based on how you grouped them!
