from https://www.etymonline.com/search?q=arithmetic

from Greek arithmetike (tekhne) "(the) counting (art)," fem. of arithmetikos "of or for reckoning, arithmetical," from arithmos "number, counting, amount".

The form arsmetrik was based on folk-etymology derivation from Medieval Latin ars metrica; the spelling was corrected early 16c. in English (though arsmetry is attested from 1590s) and French

"Ars metrica," or the "art of metrics, " or the "art of counting."

Arithmetic (from Ancient Greek ?ριθμ?ς (arithmós) 'number', and τικ? [τ?χνη] (tik? [tékhne]) 'art, craft').

The term "arithmetic" has its root in the Latin term "arithmetica" which derives from the Ancient Greek words ?ριθμ?ς (arithmos), meaning "number", and ?ριθμητικ? τ?χνη (arithmetike tekhne), meaning "the art of counting".
