Jiddu Krishnamurti
1895 - 1986
one of K’s most insightful and profound lectures
He begins by asserting that every level of society seeks to mould the minds of others. This social conditioning occurs because its perpetrators need something from this power and control.
A question came from the audience: Will there ever be an end to this societal “exploitation,” issuing “from the topmost government official to the illiterate drudge of the village.”
K’s masterful answer reveals a deep understanding of the problem which both afflicts and arises from each of us.

Editor’s prefatory comments:
Jiddu Krishnamurti has been an important teacher in my life. I began learning about the “true” and “false” selves about 15 years ago, and his insights served to inaugurate this vital area of enquiry.
He was the one to make clear that “guru” signifies merely “one who points,” not “infallible sage.” Pointing the way is what even the best teachers provide, but no more. One must walk the path of enlightenment alone, no one can do this for us.

Editor's last word:
Accumulating and becoming, working toward goals – all these are so much a part of the way we think that we resist giving it up. And we don’t have to. It’s the ego’s neediness behind the acquiring that’s the problem.
Our lives here and in Summerland can be full of all sorts of attempts at becoming, and this is right and good, but our quests and accomplishments must be part of a joy of living and not the attempt to bolster the needy little me.
