A Course In Miracles
return to "The Course" main-page:
Only minds can really join, and whom God has joined no man can put asunder. It is, however, only at the level of Christ Mind that true union is possible, and has, in fact, never been lost.
Editor’s note: The term “Christ” is not a first name like “Jesus.” “Christ,” in the original biblical languages, means “agent” or “representative.” Jesus had the Christ Mind, but we, as his brothers and sisters, all of us, sons and daughters of God, are to share in the same. Notice the statement that “only minds can join.” This reminds me of one of my very favorite writings, a dialogue between Kairissi and Elenchus in “Prometheus” as they discuss the principle of “constructive assent.” The essence of contract law is not a signed piece of paper but a meeting of the minds that must subsume any contract if it is to be valid. This applies to love relationships, too, on all levels, from love for a friend, parents, siblings, others, with the highest expression that of the romantic interaction of eternal Twin Souls. All of these, if God has joined via the Christ Mind, can never be sundered.

While walking near a woods in late January, I noticed this thorn-laden wildflower vine. Despite the cold weather of mid-winter, green buds were already in evidence: a subtle message from God that verdant and warm spring plans its coming, even during inhospitable climes.

Kairissi. As per Churchill’s history, we feel “the gathering storm” in the world.
Elenchus. It’s 1932 again, with totalitarianism on the rise, on the march. And how jubilant are the little tin-star dictators just now with their big sloppy grins.
K. (sighing) It’s very significant, Ellus, that Churchill, speaking via direct-voice medium Leslie Flint, espoused his very concerned and, frankly, very dark, prognostication for society.
E. Let others sing their “kumbaya songs around the campfire,” as the author employs the metaphor, but Churchill, as he did in 1932, and thereafter, sternly warns that our world is about to go off its rails again.
K. Much could be said about this most dire subject – how world peace is ever elusive in our ego-dominated world – but we’ve been asked to comment on how this impinges upon the “Christ Mind.”
E. Especially during times of trouble, fundamentalists are wont to declare, “Jesus is coming back soon, and then he’ll finally bring world peace, put down all enemies, with a rod of iron.”
K. But the real Jesus doesn’t think this way – the author talked about this.
E. The benefits of militarism are always temporary. You can’t bring world peace, in any meaningful sense, by substituting one totalitarian regime for another. You can’t crush and bludgeon dissidents into submission, and then think you’ve created a "wonderful world" that anyone would want to live in.
K. This is a big subject, and we will direct our readers to the relevant article for further discussion. However, how does the “Christ Mind” figure into all this?
E. The real Second Coming is the advent of the Holy Spirit, the Christ Mind. This is what Jesus was getting at in his final discourse before he was killed.
K. It has to be this way, as no other plan for world peace will work. Adrian has used the Gnostic phrase, “this world is irredeemable.” And this is absolutely true. This world cannot be fixed, only forsaken; it cannot be saved, only transcended.
E. And tell us why it’s absolutely true.
K. It’s absolutely true because the dysfunctional ego runs this world, and this means that lasting peace is impossible on planet Earth… and only the acquisition of the Christ Mind will rescue us from one more rise-and-fall of totalitarian domination.
E. A small branch with buds in mid-winter might teach us that there is always hope.
K. Yes – there is always hope; and more than hope. We have the assurance that truth and righteousness will win in the end… It’s just that, sometimes, the “gathering storm” and the dark clouds rolling in from the horizon can make everything very unpleasant… for a long time.
E. We don’t know how long a period of darkness might last. World War II burdened us for only several years, but, as we know, there have been times in history when the darkness has lasted for a very long time.
K. (sighing) We have to be prepared for a longer term; I say this because God does not love us more than others who’ve suffered in the past; my sense is, the trouble coming upon us is meant to teach all of us just how evil the ego is. And we don’t know how much time that will take… and so, we have to trust God that our lives do not exist outside the Divine plan… and anyway, no matter what happens, even if things get very bad… we are only one missed heartbeat away from Summerland… and that’s something that the totalitarians, with their big sloppy grins, can’t take away from us.
