What is a fraction in math?

  • In mathematics, the parts of a whole can be described in terms of fractions. The word fraction comes from a word in the Latin language that means “to break.” The same Latin word is the source of the English word fracture. A fraction is called a common fraction if it is written as one number over another: 1 / 3 or 3 / 4.
