The Ghost in the Cosmic Machine:
How the Theories and Underlying Metaphysical
Assumptions of Modern Science Require
an Actuating Force, an Original Unmoved Mover,
"One Free Miracle," to Make It All Work
return to "Evolution " main-page
Arthur Koestler’s book, “The Ghost In The Machine” (1967), a phrase created by Gilbert Ryle, discusses the mind-body dualism of Rene Descartes; that is, the mind as “ghost” in the biological machine.
But a materialistically-viewed universe, a very large mechanism (they say), might also require an animating “ghost,” some behind-the-scenes Life Force, to make it tick. What I mean to say is this: As we analyze the inner-workings of modern evolutionary theory, we are confronted, again and again, with materialists’ need for Terrance McKenna’s “one free miracle” to kick-start the process.
give us one free miracle, and we'll explain the rest
Dr. Rupert Sheldrake: "As my friend Terence McKenna used to say, modern science is based on the principle, 'Give us one free miracle, and we'll explain the rest'. And the one free miracle is the appearance of all the matter and energy in the universe, and all the laws that govern it, from nothing, in a single instant."
what can’t you believe
In the Sheldrake / Abraham / McKenna Trialogues, that took place between 1989 and 1998, the latter participant, Terrence McKenna, also irreverently asserted, to the effect, “If you can believe that all the energy and matter, everything that you see around you, came into existence from nothing in a hot nano-second, then – what can’t you believe?”
Yes – “what can’t you believe?” At times we find ourselves so mesmerized by group mindset and materialist propaganda that we robotically agree to whatever is spoon fed to us; we uncritically accept it, gulp it down like water.
Something-from-nothing is a “religious doctrine” of holy materialism, to be endorsed as a matter of faith. There’s no rational argument for it, but is simply required by the theory to offer semblance of coherency in a spirit of “the joker is wild.” There are, however, more credible cosmogonical explanations.

In other words, a question such as, “Who created the blueprint for all that we see?” is not so conveniently handled and dismissed. The “God” of Biblical Creationism made it all so easy to answer, but this holy-book view is fraught with difficulty and must be set aside. However, the nettlesome question remains: “Who created the blueprint?”
Darwinists, enshrining gradualism with great powers, have attempted to posit that there is no blueprint or design at all in nature; that mutation, natural selection, and eons of times will make pigs fly. But there are many problems with this view. As we’ve seen, there’s not enough time in trillions of universes for randomness to account for the well-ordered, complex organisms of nature. Charles Darwin, himself, contemplating the byzantine complexity of the eye, realizing that this one example destroyed his theory of natural selection, wasn’t kidding when he said that “the eye made me cold all over.”
Well, if gradualism cannot replace the God of Genesis, then maybe the Almighty, the All-Knowing “selfish gene” of leading evolutionist, Dr. Richard Dawkins will walk on water for us. But this prospect is met with severe disappointment, too. Genes are more like building materials – cement, lumber, nails, and bricks – and have no tiny blueprints encoded on the various nucleic acids or chromosomes.
But if there’s no first-cause help for the materialists in any of these, then maybe we’ll find salvation in platonic “eternal, immutable laws.” But, no, as we learn, the so-called eternal laws have been oscillating across the board and are not immutable after all.
There are other examples of materialistic first-cause "proxy-Gods," but the point is, whenever Darwinists come up with an idea to supplant the need for a Superintending First-Cause Cosmic Intelligence, their alternative falls flat and limps with clay feet.
after all the bad press, Universal Consciousness, Intelligent Design, "God," makes a big come-back
We will discover, as we make our way through the sea of disinformation in the evo-debate, the case for a Universal Intelligence, a Cosmic Designer (but not the God of Genesis), making a strong come-back.
This will happen, not because we’re so religious, but that there’s no other way to allow ourselves that “one free miracle” at the start. It's really hard to get something from nothing.
Editor's note: Some of the theories of materialists do attempt to craft a beginning with a "something from nothing," but, when we look at the details, their "nothing" is really a rarified "something," so that's cheating, and just "kicks the can down the road" to some earlier true beginning without a something.
